The lessons in a Primary Community center around several curriculum areas: Practical Life, Sensorial, Language, and Mathematics. Once the child has had a lesson on the use of the material, he or she is able to freely explore and repeat the activity, working toward personal mastery. The materials have a self-correcting quality that allows the child to become aware of mistakes without the correction or interference of adults. The child is encouraged in a classroom environment that respects them as individuals and promotes healthy social development.
“The culture of community, the supportive staff and guides, and the Montessori method have all been important for our family through our son's educational journey. We love Discovery for the learning that is taking place and the friendships that are being made!”
After the completion of a three-year cycle in Primary, a child usually shows signs of wanting to connect with their peers and seek a more collaborative approach on their educational journey. The child also begins to move from primarily learning by concrete sensorial means to abstract thinking. It is now that a child will begin to be introduced to the Elementary Community. The third year of the Primary curriculum overlaps with the Elementary curriculum to support the child’s developing intellectual and emotional needs.
